County Line Harvest is owned and run by first-generation farmer David Retsky who was raised far from the farming lifestyle, in Beverly Hills. He became interested in agriculture at age 18 when he spent a year living and working on kibbutz in Israel. He returned to California to work on farms in Santa Barbara and Carmel Valley, and to attend the UC Santa Cruz Farm and Garden Apprenticeship Program. David has worked on and visited farms in England, New Zealand, Portugal, Columbia, Canada and Mexico. In 2000, he started County Line Harvest on a 6-acre plot which was right on the Sonoma-Marin county line. David is dedicated to providing the public with fresh, organic produce, sustaining the environment, and to teaching a new generation of farmers. His son, Nico, was born in 2006 and is already a huge help on the farm and an avid tractor driver.
County Line Harvest currently has 6-15 employees, depending on the season. We also take on seasonal employees who want to stay for the summer or sometimes for a full year. These employees get the full experience of farm life by living on the farm, eating lots of farm produce, and working in the field and at farmers' markets.
Zoe Speidel works full-time as office manager, taking orders from restaurants and distributors, making sure that everything is harvested for farmers' markets and dealing with general bookkeeping and business-related matters. She loves to cook and is always ready with a new suggestion for preparing County Line greens. Carl has been the main guy for County Line's many San Francisco restaurants for almost two years, and is also the friendly face at the Oakland Grand Lake market (Saturdays) and the Ferry Plaza market(Tuesdays) and San Rafael (Thursdays).
Mike moved from Maine about three years ago, and has been working for County Line ever since. He is a full-time employee who lives on the ranch with his two adorable cats. You can find him at the Oakland Grand Lake market (Saturdays) and the San Rafael Civic Center market (Sundays).
There will be many new faces at the farmers' markets over the course of the year, so be sure to stop by and introduce yourself to our new employees!
